I am not a smoker. I never have been. Once, I was addicted to Oreos and Pepsi, but nicotine has never been my monkey. I was sitting outside of Bob Evans today with two of my children (ages 14 and four) when a woman sat down next to me. She had her daughter in tow who looked to be about two. This woman took out a cigarette, lit it, and began to smoke in front of all the children, then blew smoke in the direction of my kids. Are you kidding me? Never mind that you don’t mind the health risks to yourself. Never mind that you don’t care about the health risks and the message smoking sends to your own child. Do you sincerely think it is okay to pass along your poison to the children of strangers? Who does that????

I have a friend and people are always asking, “Why are you friends with her?” The short answer is that I’ve known her since she was finishing 8th grade and I was finishing 9th. I don’t like the idea of tossing out old friends, even when they become incompatible with you. This friend recently explained to her 8-year-old daughter what it meant to be retarded. Her daughter, who is currently suffering from some behavioral problems in school, and low grades, asked, “Would you rather have a retarded baby than me?” My friend told her yes. She went on to tell her daughter that because of her grades, she was “slow” and must be at least partially retarded anyway. How about this? When you don’t understand why your children are exhibiting certain behaviors, get them some counseling. When your kids aren’t getting the grades you want, hire them a tutor. There are better things to spend your money on than clothes, fast food, and Wii games. One of those things is the education of your children. If, as a parent, you are unwilling to go those extra miles for your kids, it is YOU who have failed - not the children. And when it is all said and done, when did it become okay to belittle children by telling them you’d rather have retarded kids than them? Who IN HELL does that????
